February Is Responsible Pet Owners Month

Responsible Pet Owners month is a time to celebrate the people who provide responsible pet care to animals, educate the public on what responsible pet ownership looks like, and ensure the well-being of your pets remains in focus. It’s a great time for new pet owners to make sure they’re considering all aspects of their new pet’s life and a time for existing owners to reassess their current routines. For many people, owning a pet is one of life’s greatest pleasures. They become family members, treasured friends, and beloved companions. It is important to remember, however, that pet ownership comes with significant responsibility. One huge responsibility is to ensure that your pet interacts well with other in order to prevent an accident, such as a dog bite or animal attack.

Ways To Participate In Responsible Pet Owner’s Month:

Review and Update ID Tags & Microchips

Often times pet owners move from house to house or get a new phone number and forget to update their pet’s ID tag. Ensure that it is updated because you never know when that info may be needed to get them back home safely. If your pet is microchipped review your pet’s information to ensure it’s up to date.

Educate Children

As a pet owner, you have the responsibility of providing children an opportunity to learn about responsible pet ownership by leading by example. When a child sees an adult respecting a pet and caring for them, they are more likely to do the same. It’s never too early to teach young children how to behave around animals. Get Outside with Your Pet

Pets need exercise just like their humans. Although it’s February, try to find a not-so-cold day to get outside with your pet. An active animal is a healthy animal. For our favorite dog parks in #Atlanta, click here.

Be Mindful of Your Pet’s Wellbeing

Pets are more than just our furry friends. Their wellbeing is important just like the wellbeing of people. Look for signs of distress, anger, and other troubling emotions. These can indicate illness, a life-threatening emergency, or general unbalanceShare your observations with your vet and find a way to incorporate their advice accordingly to help balance your pet.

Show Them Love and Praise

Pets love their owners and aim to please. When you praise your pet for obeying commands and showing good behavior, the animal is motivated to continue doing so. Positive reinforcement is an excellent way to raise a pet that is less likely to attack.

Consider Obedience Classes for Your Pet

These classes are valuable because they provide you with valuable information as a pet owner that can help keep your pet under your control. When your pet is under your control, potential attacks can be prevented.

Pets are great creatures to have around, but as owners we must take the proper responsibility to keep ourselves and those around us safe. If you have been a victim of a dog bite or animal attack, contact Kaufman Law for a FREE case evaluation.
